Case from Dr Shahbaz Janjua
Eruptive xanthomas appear in crops on the buttocks, extensor surfaces of the extremities, and flexural creases. Adequate treatment involves controlling the underlying hyperlipidemia with strict dietary therapy. Weight reduction and carbohydrate intake restriction are helpful in cases associated with insulin resistance.

My experience of eruptive xanthomas is that they occur in undiagnosed or poorly controlled diabetics. They usually have sky high glucose levels which are translated into high triglyceride levels.Apparently other diseases such as pancreatitis, chronic renal failure and hypothyroidism can also be seen with eruptive xanthomas. Retinoids can rarely cause them as well and apparently there are some very rare familial enzyme disorders of lipid metabolism that will present in this way.
