Case from Dr Kiran Nabar
Quite often anxious parents bring their small baby for hypopigmented patches around the lips. They are asymptomatic. There is no history suggestive of previous dermatitis. This baby was 4 months old and she had these lesions for the last 1 month. It is due to drooling of saliva. It fades slowly as the drooling decreases. It does not require any specific treatment.

The hypopigmentation presumably means that some inflammatory process has interferred with the usual pigmention on the face. Even though no inflammation was seen, is this not the same as Pityriasis alba?

P.alba patches are usually seen on cheeks and more in atopics. Where as these patches are restricted to the area of contact with saliva(so more peri oral). These are seen only in infants (and no association with atopy)and as the excess salivation decreases after they reach around one year the hypo pigmentation also clears. Where as p.alba continues till adolescence (of course showing remission and exacerbation).
